Educate: Substance abuse

It is more than likely that you know at least one person that has been affected by some form of substance abuse. Substance abuse can be anything from alcohol abuse, street drugs, to over-the-counter drugs. Whatever the substance is it is addiction that takes many lives fatally and destroys families’ everyday.

There are have been multiple studies done that show a strong connection between crime and substance abuse. When an individual is under the influence of any of these substances their judgment is altered, their perception off, and many times physical control is absent. Many cases of domestic violence and child abuse can be tracked back to some form of substance abuse.

There are various reasons that individuals find themselves addicted to whatever their drug of choice is. Diseases such as alcoholism have been researched for years, and they have found that children of alcoholics have a higher risk of themselves becoming an alcoholic. It is a cycle that is devastating, but it is a real issue.

Substance abuse is not biased; it affects all races, genders, cultures, economic backgrounds and so on. It is important to be educated, and that begins generally with family. If there is a strong line of abuse in the family, even extended family, it is important to inform children of the risks and problems that can arise with the abuse.

There are many misconceptions when it comes to individuals addicted; some are that they asked for it, it is just a choice, or they are only the homeless under the bridge. None of those are fact, but they are opinion. If you are concerned about yourself or a family member, seek professional help.
