Recovery is a multiple step program. An individual will come to a point where they need to begin to rebuild their self-esteem, and accept themselves for who they are. Here are a few tips to keep in mind to keep their focus moving forward and not backwards.
- Working the AA steps will help them to stay clean and sober. It has been shown that AA is one of the most successful modes in regaining self-respect.
- The individual need to realize that alcoholism/addiction is a disease, and those that struggle with it are not bad people.
- Try to recognize the good qualities in each and every person as well as looking for it in you. It is a good idea to journal daily on positives and strengths along with weaknesses they are working on. There are some things that can never be changed, and it is important to accept that and move on.
- It is also important to keep their word to others as well to themselves. They will not be able to respect themselves without it.
- Make sure to learn the difference between having self-respect and selfish self-centeredness. Have an accountability partner or sponsor to keep you on track, but it is important for them to be able to be open and honest whoever is chosen.
- Surrounding themselves with people they respect, who care about them and accept them for who they are.
- Even if the AA’s 12-step program is not something that is followed, it is still important to make amends with those that were affected by the addiction. This helps to let go of the guilt, and gives them the ability to move forward.
